"wow WHAT A RACE! We were in a good position anfd likely to score well! butr the seas and swells were taking their toll on both boat and crew! A hard decision to turn and run - but better to stay safe! Our plan is to finish in one piece! From WLG its a new race - but he weather is not looking good for that either - we will re evaluate before the3 start and start on our own terms. thks all on SOL for the wonderful support. Cheers. " ******************************************* UPDATE:26feb11:100utc: The latest radio check from SSANZ is available here - good to see that Open Country, who wisely headed back to New Plymouth, will be rejoining the race in less than an hour from now. ******************************************* Congratulations to our French speaking podium - First Axelxx_Pig (France) in 91h 58m 4s, Second, for the second time in this series,Do-Pig (France) in 92h 1m 44s and Third, MO_PAYEPAYE_Pig (Monaco) in 92h 4m 1s!! ******************************************* UPDATE:25feb11:0900utc: The following is a message received overnight from Open Country: "Off Egmont. with 139 Nm to wellington. we went very wide - and this seems t5o be a good move We expect to arrive Saturday afternoon All is well" ******************************************* UPDATE:24feb11:1830utc: Between the news on the SSANZ website and Crew.org.nz it appears that Open Country is doing extremely well as she is still racing. At time of writing 7 boats have withdrawn for reasons ranging from injury to dismasting, a couple have returned to Mangonui, others are motoring to the harbour at New Plymouth. The conditions down the west coast have been pretty bad, by all accounts Squid on crew.org says "the trouble with the wind easing is that with it goes the power to drive through the waves so the 'washing machine' effect still continues." G'luck Wairua - you are leading Div 4!! ******************************************* UPDATE: 23feb11:2350utc: Taken with permission from Crew.org.nz "Rough seas off the west coast of the North Island have caused two yachts in the SSANZ Round North Island two-handed fleet to turn back, on the longest leg from Mangonui to Wellington. Zen, a Bakewell White 35, has withdrawn from the race after crewman Mark Winters injured his back, and the team aboard Elliott 1050 Gale Force (David Mason and Cameron Thorpe) has told race organisers they are heading for shelter from the rough seas." and "The forecast for the Kaipara sea area in which the yachts are racing was for seas becoming rough for a time, with a northerly swell rising to 4 metres for a time north of Cape Reinga and a southwest swell of 3 metres easing. The swell is not expected to subside for several days" ******************************************* UPDATE: 22feb11:2335utc: Packet data loss across the internet have been/are causing problems connecting to SOL but thus far the fleet is continuing to make good progress. For anyone wanting to see regular updates, in addition to the SSANZ official site, there is more informal information being posted here on Crew.org.nz ******************************************* UPDATE: 21feb11: 1815utc: Just under three hours to go to the start of Leg 2. Some SOL boats have joined @OpenCountry at his mooring for a last minute bbq - who says sail racing has to be all hard work!! The 4kts winds of now are forecast to drop right off so it may take us a while to bid adieu to our first port of call! SSANZ advises "The restart time means the yachts should have a chance to get around North Cape and be on their way down the west coast to Wellington before Cyclone Atu passes down the east coast, producing large swells." *******************************************

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!
