4 December 2011

Its time to enter the next leg of this 9 leg marathon.

For this second leg we head off from Cape Town and will finish in Abu Dhabi. This looks to be a great leg and something quite different from the classic run into Cape Town. Of course we hope we have the full six boats on the line for the real start. We are looking forward to see all of you again, after the superb numbers we had in the previous race.

IMPORTANT: COURSE CHANGED reload to see the changed course!
We now sail around Maritius island to match the actual course more.

Leg 2 Cape Town to Abu Dhabi Sunday 11 December 2011,
SOL race start at 14:00 UTC

Live feed from in-port and leg start can be found here: Livestream.com and on: Youtube channel

Unfortunately there is a big shadow across this leg. This is due to the piracy threat in almost half of the planned course. The real boats will be shipped a large portion of this leg but we have chosen to run it as intended. We do want to raise awareness of this huge problem for shipping in this area so we included 2 offshore exclusion marks. This will force a more offshore route. We have tried to make the area as real as possible but unfortunately the safety zone extends way beyond what we have set.

For more information on the current situation there is a link from the ISAF: here: Warning Notice, published by the International Sailing Federation Basically stating don't go anywhere in the indian ocean at all! And a list of the incidents last year complete with a map overview here: NATO shipping incidents

Registration is now open for this leg and will close for leg 1, you have still one week to sail into Cape Town as we will close the leg 1 race in a week. Rankings will count even if you have not made it.

We have set up a forum section for additional info and links, you can find this here: Sailonline World Race topic ************

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
