17 July 2010

As you will all have realised there was a problem with the date setup of the first Sunday Scurry. This race has now become a timed race so when you finish the first run, if you want to have another go just click here [go for another run] (http://www.sailonline.org/races/264/register) . To let SOLers in all time zones have a crack at this, registration will stay open until Tuesday evening and the race will close Wednesday morning. A second fleet race started at 0900utc to satisfy the wishes of SOLers wanting such a race. Apologies to those who missed this. Registration will close Sunday evening and the race will close Monday morning. Please note, howver, that neither race will count towards any SYC or other ranking - they are both just for fun because the Ouzo Rally ended so quickly!! -------------------------------------------------------------- Special Sunday 18 Scurry Race!! Because the Ouzo Rally has been run a lot faster than anticipated there will be a special running of the Scurry tomorrow morning, Sunday, 18 July, at 0800utc!!! See you there!!! -------------------------------------------------------------- How to find out what races are in the calendar There are three ways to find out what races are in the calendar: 1. The SOL Homepage usually shows the next few races that are scheduled to be raced, either with the status of "Registration Open" or "Registration will open soon". The Homepage sometimes also shows a race that is clearly some time in the future - this is usually when it is being set up and checked, essential if it has been newly designed. SOLers can propose new races by submitting suggestions in the Race Proposals part of the Forum. 2. Click on the Races link, above. By doing this you will first see details of the races on the Homepage, but to see more, click on the "go to race archive"link and you will find details of other races that have been set up. 3. Visit the Race Proposals Forum where you will see monthly calendars. The current month is usually fixed (except when the weather catches us out), future months are posted for debate by all SOLers so as to ensure that a good mix of SOL favourites and new ocean or offshore races is achieved.

Mad Max by Balloon 2026 - Across the Outback

Mad Max Rockatansky doesn’t get to go in a balloon in any of the Legends of the Wasteland, and the Wasteland is not necessarily the Outback of Australia, but Mel Gibson and film director George Miller indubitably are… of Australia, and ballooning as reconnaissance is a main feature of the Mad Max spin-off video game, so here goes: 1500nm in a balloon from somewhere on the edge of the Outback, Goondiwindi, to cross a finish line at Fitzroy Crossing, somewhere on the edge of the Outback!

Roma Giraglia Regata 2026

Our eighth race of nine to celebrate all things Mediterranean - fickle winds, history and olive oil – is another buddy-up; this one with the Circolo Nautico Riva di Traiano . Founded in 1984, as the new Traiano yacht Harbour neared completion, the Circola since then has developed into one of the major yachting competition centres in Italy, and next to the 450nm Roma per Tutti (which SOL buddied earlier in the year), the Roma Giraglia Regata is its other headline offshore event. First raced in 2005, the 210nm course takes competitors from Traiano to a rock on the inside of the Ile de la Giraglia off the northern tip of Corsica and back to the Italian mainland for a finish in the bay of Santo Stefano. We’re racing this one in our Class 40!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Masirah to Chagos

Having crossed, re-crossed and re-re-crossed the Convergence Zones of the Pacific and the Atlantic, we now face our second crossing of the Convergence Zone of the World’s third great equator-spanning sea, the Indian Ocean, taking us from the channel between Masirah Island and the Oman mainland to the Chagos Archipelago. It’s 1900nm and we’ll be sailing our very fine Archer 78, and won’t mention that both locations (of departure and arrival) are heavily militarized and the why’s and what next’s concerning that – mindful as always of SOL Netiquette.
