SOL is off to the waters off South America for the running of Zero's Salvador-Noronha-Trindade race. 125ft cats should see us make light work of the 2400nm. Salvador, our start/finish point, is the largest city in the NE of Brazil and was its first colonial capital. These days it is known for its cuisine and its afro-brazilian culture and is a vibrant spot in an otherwise relatively poor area of Brazil. The first Mark for our race is the island of Fernando de Noronha - a volcanic island archipelago located some 224 miles off the east coast of Brazil. The island was discovered by the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci who landed on the island in 1503 - at this point it was uninhabited except for "lizards, snakes and very big rats"!! These days the island and its emerald-clear warm waters has become a holiday destination for the rich and famous – it is also a protected environment much loved by naturalists and marine biologists. The second Mark in our race is Trindade (known also as Trinidad)located some 700 miles from Brazil in the S Atlantic. This is a very small island with no permanent residents - only Brazilian navy and scientific personnel - but came to fame in 1958 when a naval photographer snapped pictures of what appear to be UFOs . .. so keep your eyes peeled!!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
