If there is anything you know about Leg 5 of the Sailonline Ocean Race, it is probably that a) it takes you across the Pacific Ocean, and b) it is 12,300 nautical miles long. So what could possibly prevent you from just pointing your bow in the general direction of the Strait of Magellan, bolting the helm down in its center position, grab a keg of beer and happily sail from gorgeous sunset to magnificent sunrise. Nothing, right? Well, not exactly. You see, the pond between Qingdoa and Cape Horn is littered with beautiful tropical islands you would love to spent some time on, just not when you are in the middle of a race. So please do take the time to read this short Yachtsmen's Guide to the Pacific Islands. Shortly after leaving Qingdoa your first obstacle (assuming the Korean Peninsula, the island Chejo Do as well as the Japanese island of Kyushu are left well to port) will be the Ryukyu Islands with Okinawa as a main tourist destination. Depending on your route, either the Bonin Islands (Iwojima), the Mariana Islands (Guam) or the Republic of Palau will be next. Then: the Truk Islands, the Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal), the Santa Cruz Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji, New Zealand, Chatham Islands, or Western Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and the Marquesas Islands. And then there are numerous other sneaky little islands, atols and reefs that will only show up on your GPS at maximum zoom. So you had better remind your crew to keep their eyes open and that this leg there will be no napping on the sun deck! /Schakel

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
