SSR4 compliant software

Software

The Sailonline Racing Rules (SRR) describe in rule 4 that in some cases the use of software is prohibited while racing. This page is to clarify, in case of doubt, whether a particular program is allowed or prohibited to be used while racing. The SRR take precedence over this page.

The following software is allowed to be used while racing:

Official sailonline clients (this list can be assumed to be up-to-date):

  • HTML5 client "breezy" - https://sailonline.org/breezy/run/xxxx/ (where xxxx is the race number)
  • Development version of HTML5 client "breezy" - https://sailonline.org/breezy/run/xxxx/?version=dev (where xxxx is the race number)
  • Flash client "windy" - https://sailonline.org/windy/run/xxxx/ (where xxxx is the race number)
  • Classic Flash client "windy" - https://sailonline.org/windy/run/xxxx/?version=classic (where xxxx is the race number)
  • Standalone HTML5 client "breezy" - https://sailonline.org/static/breezy/
  • Development version of standalone HTML5 client "breezy" - https://sailonline.org/static/breezy/?version=dev
  • Legacy mobile client - https://sailonline.org/m/
  • iOS client - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sailonline/id1522091176
  • Android client - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.sailonline.solclient

Any software that does not interact with sailonline is automatically SRR4 compliant, examples are:

  • QtVLM up to version 5.10-9 p4, the newest version at the time of writing
  • Expedition up to version up to version v11.14.4, the newest version at the time of writing
  • Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc

When the software interacts with sailonline, it needs to comply with SRR4. Examples of SRR4 compliant software are:

  • Auto Grib Loader (AGL) by Kipper1258 up to version 14.3.5, the newest version at the time of writing. (With the caveat that use of the mayday feature is limited by other rules in the SRR, see the AGL manual)
  • brainaid.de toolbox at the time of writing (4th January 2022)
  • SPINNACER by kroppyer (provided you do not activate the included autopilot) up to version 1.2, the newest version at the time of writing
  • WxInspector by AGage at the time of writing (4th January 2022)

The following software is not allowed to be used while racing:

  • banned: Autopilot tool in SPINNACER. The SPINNACER software includes a warning that the autopilot tool is not allowed to be used while racing

Sailonline is aware of the existence of other programs that do not comply with SRR4, but most of them are not freely available. Any software that can send commands to sailonline to steer your boat may not comply with SRR4. If there is any doubt feel free to contact us.

Tall Ships Races 2025 - Le Havre to Dunkirk

Welcome to the first of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . The course for this first race is between the French ports of Le Havre and Dunkirk; circa 125nm in Sailonline’s magnificent 90m Barque.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
