  • Re: Comparing SailingOnLine with VirtualRegatta

    Hi,
discovered virtual sailing on VR at the VVORG (113th) and ended up pretty addicted, although often frustrated not to be able to manage full races without leaving laptop for a few days therefore messing up good positions. Eventhough VR was friendly to the user I also found that the squares, the 12 hours delays in weather and massive numbers of participants were taking a lot away from reality. I found SOL without really looking for it and had a go before christmas... really enjoyed my first race... SOL has always a race on or one coming... these races are short which suits a busy schedule, the dc system really allows good night sleep, I really like the dynamic weather evolution and the fact the races are of "human" size with 300-600 participants. Must say I have not been back on VR since mini transat (4th by the way;-)). I dont race much anymore but must say I enjoy a race once in a while and SOL defo suits great. Keep up good work

first go at forum... love working out results, numbers and ranking (usually work out results in my club , ;-) ). anyway... some good propositions there... I think ranking whatever the system should take into account the following principle

    - leaders should truly be the best sailors racing regularly enough (same in tennis, federer may not play all tournaments but he plays enough to get the points!)
    - most rankings are rolling rankings and are 12 months based. although I suppose to increase interest, 6 nmonth would be enough on SOL.
    - events are weighted (grand slam versus small event / grade one versus grade 3 with ISAF). on SOL there are so many events you have to do your selection to avoid total addiction. would be great to have a couple of majors and a lot of secondary events (they are actually in place already) and weight them differently. example : a ranking could be done on your best 8 major (double points) + 12 minor within six month on a rolling base... It take some time to the newbie (which I am part of) to climb, allows sailors to select their events and to good results to be retained for a while.

    just an idea...

    Tom

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
