Details of the recent server outages experienced on Thursday 2012-11-01 and Saturday 2012-11-03:

The first outage was because of the disk space filled up and the server was down 17:57 - 18:13 (16 minutes) until I was able to free up some space and restart the server.

The second outage was because a really rare coincidence with the server processes caused the sailing engine watchdog not to restart the process when it had died. The server was down 15:04 - 15:12 (8 minutes).

The server disk space running out was a really stupid mistake by me. I had checked it just week before and thought that there would be enough for two weeks. However, I have now already put in place a monitoring system which warns admins by email if the disk space is up to 90% usage.

I have also identified the reason for the second outage, it can happen basically one time of 1000 in a situation when the sailing engine needs to be restarted. Now that I know the reason I will fix it to be more robust.

I am really sorry for the inconvenience caused by these problems. To my knowledge the server has been down by our fault only these 2 times since June for total of 24 minutes. Our server provider also had an longer outage (few hours, I think) but even with that I can say that the uptimes sailonline.org has could be envied by much larger and more professional web services.
Markku, totally accepted by me, very well done from my point of view, a few minutes down cost me about 25 places at that spot - if not needing to gybe, would have had very little impact
Please keep your fantastic standards of delivery

Sebensa

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!
