Board » Flag Officers » Race proposals » Race on Shackleton's trace - 800nm on whale boat

Howdy!

I would like to propose a race on the traces of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance Expedition.

Historical Background:
After having lost the Endurance, the crew reached the Antarctic Elephant Island with the remaining lifeboats.
To get rescue, Shackleton decided to sail to South Geargia with a
6,85 meter boat called 'James Caird'. He and his crew (Worsley als Navigator, Crean, McNish, John Vincent und Timothy McCarthy). He started on april 24th in 1916 to sail to South Georgia. He reached this Island on may 8th.

The remainig crew on Elephant Island was rescued on august 30th 1916.

The James Caird:
The 22.5-foot (6.9 m) long James Caird had been built as a whaleboat in London to Worsley's orders, designed on the "double-ended" principle devised by Norwegian shipbuilder Colin Archer.

I do not know how to get the polar for a whale boat. Some of SOLers will probably know...

I hope you are interested in that race

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!

Tasmania to Kamchatka 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. Tasmania to Kamchatka, part of our Ocean Championship and also the third leg of the ROW (Round the Old World) series. Be aware of the obstacles on the way, likely to split the fleet. It's like X:mas to X:mas, crossing the same waters, navigating the same archipelagos. This second race of OCQ2 2026 will be sailed in our revised 'version 2' Imoca 60 Foil. Race #2031
