Board » General Discussion » How to get long range forecasts from NCEP

Go to: http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/
Select: GFS logo
Under U.S.-No America select: "View more model forcasts"
This takes you to "Model Analyses and Guidance" page.
Select: "Model Guidance"
Select an area (for SOL WR leg 4 select "Asia"
Select a Model Type (start with "GFS")
This will load page with "Available Model Cycles"
For surface winds select "10m_wind_precip"
That will load a box of colums with projected winds from 3 hours out to 384 hours out. Select any and a chart of the projected Wx for that day and hour will load. This can be saved as a gif file. From the chart page you can return to the Available Model Cycles page to select another time in the furture.
Very helpful - thanks Jack...

Be interested to look at some of the other models implied in your post - they can often be helpful when trying to predict how later winds will change from the current forecast

Are these published earlier than NOAA's grib file runs?

Saildocs is also a good way of getting long range forecast.

If you send the following to queryATsaildocs.com...
Subject: anything you want
Body: send GFS:40N,61S,40E,140W|1,1|0,6..336|PRMSL,WIND

... you get the grib file for the specified area and timeframe in return.

You can also subscribe...
Subject: anything
Body: sub GFS:40N,61S,40E,140W|1,1|0,6..384|PRMSL,WIND days=0 time=23:00 interval=6

... and you get this sent to you 5 min after each time interval starting from 23z tonight. (Saildocs runs subscriptions 5 min after every 1/2 hour and the full 384h run is normally finished by then).

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!
