Is there some algorithm to compute the ends of the finish line? I notice there is only a single point specified in the data that gets sent to the SOL client, and different races seem to have different length lines.

Hi Aaron,

The length of of the finish line is set for each race. The finish line always extends that length perpendicular to the final leg rhumb line.

Yes perpendicular is clear, but are there rules for certain race lengths. For example I notice the shorter races are 2Nm, and the imoca races are 100Nm? is it based on race type?

The length is set manually by the race administrator.

AGage - as Kalle said, the length of the finish line is set when the course is established in the database. There is no rule, as such, but obviously in a tight archipelago/inshore race the line has to fit in the space available, while, for the first time, the Cape Horn finish for Leg 4 of the Global Challenge was set at 100!

Most ocean finish lines are 1, most inshore finish lines are 1 or 0.5... some even smaller, as I say, to fit the circumstances of the race.

Welcome to the fourth of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . This fourth race is from Stavanger in Norway into the Skaggerak to a finish off Denmark’s Aalborg and perhaps an Aquavit to toast the adventure afterwards – a final circa 250nm in Sailonline’s classic Clipper 240.
NOTE: Starts and Finishes in tall ships racing are always offshore to avoid conflict with shipping and shipping lanes; online and real-life may not match exactly.

Chinook Salmon - Canada to Andreanovs


A year after spawning in the upper reaches of the rivers of British Columbia, Chinook Salmon develop the age-old urge, so familiar to SOLers, to go to sea, heading for different parts of the northern Pacific Ocean. This race catches up with a particular school with an instinctive memory for the Andreanov Islands far west on the Aleutian Islands chain, as they depart the Salian Sea between Vancouver Island and the San Juans. It’s 2200nm and we’re taking the 60ft Trimaran, in the hope we can keep up!

Juventud TIMED Race 2026

Welcome to Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth), Cuba’s second largest island after mainland Cuba. Known as a haven for pirates, the island was the inspiration for novels “Treasure Island” and “Peter Pan”. The circa 120nm course runs clockwise around the island.
