Alaçatı is a typical Aegean town on the western coast of İzmir famous for its architecture and windmills. Today the rich buy and restore old stone houses and many hotels have been opened in the last few years have become very popular. It is also considered to be one the best surfing spots in the world with many windsurfing schools and international competitions taking place.

BODRUM (Halicarnassus)

As a place where people have lived continuously for thousands of years Bodrum has an incredibly rich past. Its position in or near so many of the great civilization and events of ancient history also makes Halicarnassus (Bodrum's ancient name) an important site for historians. Finding one source of complete historical information on Bodrum is apparently impossible, so the account that follows is a distillation from several sources.

Herodotus, the "Father of History", was born in Halicarnassus...

The first settlement in this area which left structural evidence behind was on the rocky little island where the Castle of St. Peter now stands (the castle was once completely surrounded by water). When the Knights of St. John arrived to build their fortress, they found the ruins of an older castle, now known to have been built by the Dorians around 1100 BC.

Herodotus, the "Father of History", who lived in the Fifth Century BC and was born in Halicarnassus, wrote that the Dorians came from Troezen on the east coast of the Peloponnese. They called their new island Zephyria and the settlement Zephyrium.

Historians have little evidence concerning the foundation of mainland Halicarnassus. The first known mention of it comes form the Seventh Century BC. Halicarnassus was one of six members in the Dorian Confederation of Hexapolis, along with the mainland city of Cnidos, the island of Cos, and three cities on Rhodes.

Due to its location, Bodrum and surrounding seas have been of special importance to naval acheologists.
INA - http://inadiscover.com/ has made discovery of the oldest commercial vessel with its full cargo leading to important findings and still continues to work in Bodrum surroundings...one of his colleagues was my Professor at university DR Fray!

ANTALYA

The city of Antalya has become famous for her beaches and history has a very modest old port cosy and surrounded by good fish restaurants. From this modest city the province has become "the touristic" region of Turkey with millions of tourists coming to Antalya because of its mild weather year round.

Besides the long sandy beaches there is a lot to be seen and done in Antalya: you can go swimming in the morning and skiing at Saklikaent up in the Toros Mountains about an hour from the city center: http://www.saklikent.com.tr/index.php?lang=en

You visit Aspendos, an amphitheater with 7000 seats, Thermesos, etc. etc

Now most of us except the leading group (who are in a hurry!) will be passing in front of Side and the Manavgat river and falls..Side is an archeological site and Manavgat is a natural beauty...you can also go rafting on the Koprulu Canyon...

Now the leading group has a view of the ALANYA fortress built by Alaiddin Keykubat of the Seljuk Turks...and the ship docks at sea level.

Iceland to the Falklands 2026

Welcome to an all-new route, the first of three Round the 'Old World' of Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. To give each leg of the ROW a bit of length we'll try to hug the coasts as little as possible, so starting in Iceland our first leg of the series, which will also be the final leg of our Quarter 1 Ocean Championships takes us 7200nm to the Falklands, the full length of the Atlantic end to end. To make sure we'll get it done within the month we'll be sailing our Maxi Trimaran.
