Board » General Discussion » Ranking calculation - suggestion

hi all

i dono if this topic was already treated, there are so many i couldnt hv a look at all of them.

i think there should be a coefficient for the races in order to establish a real and better representative syc members ranking.
indeed i guess it is not fair to spend 2-3 weeks in a race and 2-3 days in another and to have the same weighted points.
and more, the number of boats in a race is also important for the dnc or dns. so there should also be a weight for the number of boats entries, with a time limit for the registration. the higher the number of boats registered is, the higher the race weight should be.

i would suggest to use a rating system as follow:

race from 0-500 miles coefficient 1.0
501-100 miles coeff 1.5
1001-1500 miles coeff 2.0
1501-2000 miles coeff 2.5
etc...
the formula to use can be:
race points = race ranking x coeff x nb of boats registered / 1000

timed race: coefficient 1.0
the formula to use can be simple in order to make the timed races attractive:
race points = race ranking x coeff

or a system similiar to the above. any comment?

Hi all,
the proposed system looks nice. Give more motivation and reward to the long race. (forget my actual position, please!)
Was already proposed in the past?
May be we can open a survey on it?
Question to TUR Aklinyolu1: have you tried to elaborate ranking with it using the last 10 race?
Regards to all

No I didnt in details, but I hv made few calculations and it seems balanced.
I really point on this subject!
Can SOL reply please? :)

Although this is an interesting idea, I don't think a race is worth more just because it's longer.

Long races require different strategies and abilities. For example, weather forecasting is more important in a long race, while finer points of tacking, hitting marks, navigating among islands is usually a part of the short races.

I can't think of any other sport where the length of a race is weighted higher. Do we give multiple gold medals for longer races in track, swimming? Is an overtime victory worth more than one in "regulation time"?

I think as long as we have a good balance in length of races offered, the current system is better.
Thanks.
Bob, to answer your question, yes here in the real races with several legs, the longer races have higher weight. I am not saying it is a common practice in IRC races but yes it exists. Your other examples, I think they do not match with sailing as for example a swimmer or runner is participating either to the short or long distance, but a sailboat can participate to both.
Long races need more time, and this time value shall I guess be included in the calculations.
Meantime, the number of participant is also important as it directly affects the final result in case of DNS or DNC, and it shows the importance of the race. Few participant means better chance to win or lower points if DNS. Lots of participants mean lower chance to win and higher points if DNS.
Rgds.

The Decathlon, pentathlon triathlon, are based on this system. And the overall victory usually go to the one tha excell in one discipline and is good enought in the others one, or sometime do not win any of the partial competitions but is always 2nd or 3rd. Is not a specialist but is good in all.
Regards.
After seeing last weekend's Orno Runt last minute race alerts and so, I would like to underline this subject again.
I really don't see why Sailors shall be punished with DNS or DNF under such conditions?
Why do the November Transat and Orno Runt races have the same weights?
Thank you
Aklinyolu1
I like the fact that the races are rated equal. If a weighting system is going to be implemented we'll see less boats in "cheap" races (points wise) where you'll lose less by DNS than if you sail and end up in a bad position.

SOL should be all about the fun and sailing tactics, not about ranking tactics IMO.

Andaman Islands PYOC 2025

The Andaman Islands are an archipelago, made up of 200 islands, in the northeastern Indian Ocean. Together with the Nicobar Islands to their south, the Andamans serve as a maritime boundary between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east. These waters will be the theater of our next 240nm race in the ARCH 2025 series. Which one you choose depends only on you, i.e. your Elan 410 sport will leave the Andaman Islands on the starboard or port side.

Isla San Lorenzo RTI 2025

SOL’s SRC (Sailonline Race Committee) has taken us to some unusual places in the past, and San Lorenzo Island off Lima’s Callao peninsula is definitely another one. Housing a naval base and a penal institution, no vessel is allowed within 300m of its shores. Also, with no sources of potable water, it is a matter of debate whether it is an island at all, and not just a large rock. So, whatever you do, don’t be tempted to BBQ; you’ll be arrested and go thirsty! We return for the first time since 2018 to race thirteen potentially unlucky miles in J-30s; have fun!!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
