Board » General Discussion » Manila Race NOR

NOR of Manila race, clearly states that Mindaro island MUST be left to port. I have not seen any change on this. And a lot of boats left the island on starboat and finish the game. Also, how can a boat finishes by passing the finish line through the opposite direction?

TUR 3169
A lot of discussion on the race chat page about this. In general it was decided that some informations had been missing from the Sailing Instructions, so in order to let people continue racing and having fun, it was best to allow the deviations.

If nothing else it showed how lateral thinking and sailing the "long way round" can sometimes be quicker.

Well. NOR is NOR. It can NOT be altered at chat. Chat is unformal and race can NOT be based on chat. On the other hand, it was very clear that the island MUST be left to port.
Yes, we all make fun here. But there should be at least some respect to the ones who take the official notices seriously.
In short, I did a mistake. In an attempt to try to correct my problem I moved the wp up north so that the course should be obvious to everyone. Sorry.

speaking personally, I take the racing seriously - as seriously as one can for a virtual sail. And I agree that the Race Instructions should present everyone an equal chance to win, based on skill.

Let's see how the next races work out shall we, and not overburden the race gods with sand in their mental ball bearings ?

stay happy !
Just to register, I totally agree with Adnan Yurdum as I think 99% of the boats did. Leave Mindoro to port was pretty clear and entering a narrow channel, with weak winds and if not enough, against you, was absolutely not attractive. But mandatory.

Some time I set the start, hours and days before, and I don't expect that the conditions terms will be changed after the race is open for registration. I read the instruction under RACES > CURRENT RACES and nowhere else, if not pointed clearly to it at these side.

Under Manilla race I become aware of the change via chat - days after - that someone had moved wp Mindaro. And that race instruction was changed in front of start time. We are not all sitting by the screen all the time.

On my screen - that is running behind a proxy - I have my WP set and a will loose these if I refresh the screen.

A wp, land or island have no port or starboard side. So please don't use these terms under the race instruction. Make it clear in the manual that we are using the boats own port / starboard side and nothing else.

I understand the frustration from sailors that race instructions is not equal for all of us. I my self had a bad experience of these under the "Carebien" race last year. 24 or less hours before end line I set CC - was then #29 - to hit the line and waked up to #96 and well off to Venezuela. These because some one had moved the end line.

Again, we are not sitting behind the screen 24/7 all the time. Some of us have other things to do, between and under races.
We are working on a system that will automatically display the SI in the client. Have faith :-)

Haida Gwaii 2024

We will end the second quarter of the ARCH competition with a 390nm race around the Haida Gwaii islands (literally "Islands of the Haida people"), also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. This is an archipelago located on the northern Pacific coast of Canada. In SOL, we last raced on this route in 2012 and few people remember what happened there. Prepare your Riptide 50 well, it's going to be a lot of fun.

Newport Bermuda Race 2024

The 636-mile biennial Newport Bermuda Race is one of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean races, and with the Fastnet Race and the Sydney to Hobart Race, it is one of the three great classic races of the yachting world. Founded in 1906, this 53rd running of the Bermuda Race can again also be participated in online.
Entries are invited for one of the four divisions:
Double-Handed Division:
Jeanneau Sun Fast 3600
St. David's Lighthouse Division:
Santa Cruz 52
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division:
Judel Vrolijk 62
Finisterre Division:
Riptide 50
Details for each yacht are available in the ‘Particulars’ links below. As in real life, you can only sail one boat in one division, so choose your virtual yacht carefully, and because of the unusual (for SOL) 4-division nature of the event, please note results will not count towards any Sailonline rankings.
