Board » General Discussion » Leg 5 south of Cape Horn?

Is the NW passage an allowed route or do we have to pass South of the Cape?
See another thread with the same request.

LOOK in the section NOTICE of RACE.
Read the SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Leg 5.

You can go any where you like as long as you do not sail off the edge of the known (virtual) world as that is where the ancient warning apples:
"Beyond here lives Monsters and Dragons"

"The legendary Cape Horn to Port."

If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
Why a race called Volvo ocean race and not follow the rules in the real race? rediculous
But... we call this race "Sailonline Ocean Race". Is that ok or do you have any better suggestions?
...one of the guys behind the game...
Perhaps we should sail a circumpolar-race for the fans of the extreme north some day. But there has to be some ice on the charts (as long as there is any ice)
;)

Also the Volvo OR sailing instructions only are posted 1 day BEFORE the start on their notice board and this is NOT enough time to get organised in SailonLine.

We try to start at the same time as the real event, in case you can watch on TV or internet web at the same time, and still sail in SailonLine.

Also our courses need to be developed and decisions made about which way e.g. past New Zealand and if there are ice gates or not need to be planned.

As it is, the guys do a great job and whilst I do the Sailing Instructions, often course decisions need to be made well in advance of the VOR real sailors. In leg 5, the decision of "No Ice Gates" was made by the SailOnLine guys well BEFORE VOR SI's published, and I had to follow their earlier decision. It would be worse having conflicting courses and Instructions.

Oh for a perfect world!

We do but try to do our best! At least I am ahead of most of you being at UTC+13hrs.

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!
