As a DNF wasn’t an option for psail, I was completely out of mind when I signed up for this race.
That simple fact was already a personal victory, but a much higher one to the sailors who had the guts and determination to sight the finish line.
Near the end (in reality, a whole and long day before it) Svein masterly resumed this race using a simple word: “SISU”.

After crunching and cooking the numbers for psail (see attached Excel file) I focus now on some facts:

1 - The average TWD for my race was 248º with an average TWS of 3,64 Kts;
2 - In that range of TWS the upwind VMG’s for the Farr 38 are positioned between 48º and 57º;
3 - The Farr 38 wasn’t designed to go fast upwind, especially with light winds.

I’m sure this race is going to be a SOL classic one but, please, change the race boat, because with the wind characteristics for the race area and, without losing the spirit of this unique race, we can turn it more competitive and even interesting for all.

Once again I take the opportunity for taking off my hat to Smo, the winner, now in the quality of SYC’s new member, and to all who finish it.

(SISU: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisu ).

JB - The SRC plan on scheduling the VanIsle 360 race next quarter. It seems you were not happy with the Farr 38 last year. Which boat polar would be your preference? There are some with tighter tacking ability in light winds. Please give us your choice(s) and we will consider them.

Viva all.

Thank you SRC.

My suggestion is the SOTO 30.

Pls see also attached PDF file with graphical data containing FARR 38 and SOTO 30 VMGUp and VMGDown.

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!

Tasmania to Kamchatka 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. Tasmania to Kamchatka, part of our Ocean Championship and also the third leg of the ROW (Round the Old World) series. Be aware of the obstacles on the way, likely to split the fleet. It's like X:mas to X:mas, crossing the same waters, navigating the same archipelagos. This second race of OCQ2 2026 will be sailed in our revised 'version 2' Imoca 60 Foil. Race #2031
