2014-05-20 11:05:06 - Geneva Lake Sprint race and the AC72.
The Bol D'or is a short race in the Lake Geneva or also named Lac Lemand. The length of this race doesn’t make justice to the difficulty’s it has, namely the wind conditions the sailors will find during the course. Tactics and fine hand on helm is a must to succeed here.
This is the second race we propose to be sailed with the new AC72 SOL boat.

I and Jan hope that all SOLers enjoy it.

Might the new boat be ready for a Sprint race on Lake Geneva in 3Q2014 or will the possibly excessive performance loss for a tack or gybe not yet be addressed?

The proposal for the AC72 includes two innovations:
1/ a radically different performance loss model.
2/ a radical loss of boat speed above 28kn windspeed down to 0kn when the wind gets up to 40kn.
However....
the AC72 will fly just as well without these and there is no reason to simply:
1/ run with the existing performance loss model (there just won't be much tacking or gybing going on and quite a bit of pinching and soaking deep to clear a mark or obstacle, like in the KergCanCan only worse).
2/ assume all the boatspeed curves above 26kn are the same as at 26kn; you just can't go any faster.
If we did that, we could be out on Lac Leman or off Cascais as soon as there is a gap in the calender?

Red Eye - Hobart Convict Run 2026

Back in 2010, one of our SOLers of the first hour, AUS_Scott76, came up with this ‘Convict Run’ out from Hobart, past Cape Raoul and the penal colony of Port Arthur, round Tasman Island, up and back down the east coast of Tasmania, to finish with a tight technical run – so Scott called it – up the picturesque D'entrecasteaux Channel, home to Hobart once again. It’s 250nm, ideal for a bit of ‘Red Eye’ in comfortable Finngulf 43’s, and if the original idea was to pick up some convicts on the way for a bit of R&R and sea air, you may always drop’m back before returning to Hobart!

New Ice Age 2026 - Longyearbyen to Browerville


Although we have by no means exhausted the possibilities of ice boating on lakes at high latitudes or high altitudes, it was noticeable that as our 2025 Series progressed, there were calls from time to time for longer-distance challenges, and so in response to these calls we will pretend that global warming has reversed and as a result the coastal waters of Antarctica and Russia and Canada have fully (and smoothly!) frozen over offering us the possibility of a 4-race New Ice Age series in our trusted no-PL DN machines. Our first leg takes us 2600nm from Svalbard’s Longyearbyen east to North Alaska’s Browerville. You’ll be a few days on the ice, so dress warmly and take some provisions; go!

Bight of Bonny TIMED Race 2026

Welcome to the first TIMED race of 2026! Our race finds us in the Gulf of Guinea and the Bight of Bonny. Starting in Douala, Cameroon the 170 nm course takes us around the island of Bioko with its Caldera and tropical rainforests finishing in Calabar, Nigeria.
