The April Ocean Race marked another dramatic chapter in our ROW (Round the Old World) competition. Of the 142 registered vessels, 100 crossed the starting line at the gun, while a total of 133 competitors eventually committed to the demanding voyage into Arctic waters. With the course spanning more than 180 degrees of longitude, the theoretically shortest route would have been westward. However, race boundaries ruled out that option, while Antarctica further limited opportunities to follow a true great-circle course. As uncertainty shaped early tactics, the fleet immediately spread across an arc of nearly 120 degrees after the start. Although the theoretical great-circle distance measured 4,954 nautical miles, the shortest realistically sailable route extended to 6,306 nautical miles.

The groups pursuing the shortest routing options held the advantage during the opening 12 days. However, stronger and more favorable winds eventually benefited the main fleet, which surged ahead on Day 13. The eventual winner first emerged as a serious contender on Day 10, suddenly appearing ahead of the leading pack before taking the overall lead on Day 14. That same day, the fleet experienced its first taste of the “Furious Fifties,” encountering powerful following winds exceeding 47 knots.

The final week delivered continuous reshuffling among the leading boats, with podium positions remaining undecided until less than 10 hours before the finish. The winning skipper completed the race in just over 22 days and 4 hours, covering 7,472 nautical miles at an average speed of 14 knots, with peak speeds reaching 22 knots. At the other extremes, the shortest recorded distance sailed was 6,669 nautical miles, resulting in 86th place, while the longest route covered an astonishing 10,100 nautical miles and finished in 95th position.
