The March Ocean Race marked the start of the ROW (Round the Old World), echoing last year’s RWW campaign. Out of 125 registered vessels, 85 crossed the starting line, while an impressive 116 ultimately set course for the South Atlantic. The fleet departed under favourable following winds, quickly settling into a fast initial reach. Strong and shifting conditions pushed the boats toward the Azores, reached after just 60 hours of racing, with an exceptional average VMC of 26 knots.

The fleet remained tightly grouped until day seven, when forecast uncertainty disrupted the pattern. Approaching the doldrums, routing software began favouring a more easterly track, tempting some competitors. Over the next 18 hours, indecision and shifting models caused the fleet to fragment, as sailors weighed conflicting strategies. In the end, the eastern gamble failed to deliver, while the more consistent westerly route proved decisive. From there, the remaining 2,500 nautical miles turned into a sprint to the finish. The eventual winner had already established control, leading for roughly the final three quarters of the race. The podium positions were effectively locked in by day ten and remained unchanged over the final 74 hours.

It was a fast race overall, with an average VMC of 22.4 knots and an actual average speed of 23.4 knots. The official course distance measured 7,242 nautical miles, though the winning boat sailed 7,575 nautical miles. The widest routing spread saw the longest distance logged at 8,803 nautical miles (finishing 70th), while the shortest route of 7,363 nautical miles resulted in a 71st-place finish

Roma per Tutti 2026

Sailonline are honoured and delighted to have been asked to partner an online first Roma per Tutti yacht race with organizing yacht club, Circolo Nautico Riva di Traiano . In real life, this will be the 33rd edition of this 540nm offshore race from Rome’s Riva di Traiano to the Aeolian Islands and back. Online, the race will not only be our first partnership with CN Riva di Traiano, but also the second race of our Magical Mediterranean series. A number of Mini 6.50s have been entered for the 33rd edition of the Roma per Tutti; so our own vintage Mini is also our virtual yacht of choice for this one.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island. It’s one of the longer ones 6400nm, more than half way around the world (and the Antarctica). It starts the 2026 OCQ2, and will be sailed in our Steinlager 2, contrary to prior notice.
