Commentary

The opening leg of the Rounding the New World series began with a remarkable consensus on strategy, as almost the entire fleet initially followed the rhumb line. That unity lasted for only about six hours before the first boats gybed southwest. Three hours later, the main fleet followed suit. These early decisions produced the two strategies that would ultimately dominate the race. Between them sailed a smaller group of "rhumb-line riders," who enjoyed the early advantage and led the fleet for the first four days. By Day 5, the eastern group had taken over the lead and managed to stay in front for the next 24 hours. The following day, however, the western fleet caught up and moved ahead. From that point onward, they never relinquished the lead.

Throughout most of the race, the eastern and western groups remained remarkably close, rarely more than 30 nautical miles apart. Yet their different angles gradually paid dividends, and after 14 days the western fleet converged approximately 250 nautical miles ahead of the main eastern group. The race result reflected the success of the western strategy. Western-route boats claimed seven of the top eight finishing positions, with the only exception being the skipper who finished fourth, having followed a completely independent routing strategy. The eastern group filled positions 8 through 13.

The eventual winner had effectively secured victory by Day 11, but the battle for the remaining podium places was far from settled. A closely fought duel for second place continued for another week before finally being decided on Day 17, providing an exciting finish to an outstanding opening leg. All in all, 97 parties participated, of which 66 started on time, while 68 managed reach the finish line, at the time of writing. Longest distance sailed, 7791 nm, at #37, while shortest sailed 5718 reached pos. 49.

Isle of Mull TIMED Race 2026

Welcome to the west coast of Scotland for an 80 nm race around the Isle of Mull. Mull is home to castles, distilleries, and the Highland Games. The race begins just north of Oban in the shadow of Dunstaffnage Castle and after rounding the island finishes down the coast at Crinan. The Twister 28 with its classic long keel is the boat for this race.

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Cocos to Sagar Island


Kapil Muni, incarnation of Lord Vishnu, founder of the Samkhya school of philosophy, disturbed from his meditation, in his wrath reduced the 60,000 sons of Sagar to ashes, as they dug the earth to retrieve the sacrificial horse that Lord Indra, the king of the Gods, stole off Sagar, thus creating the Sagara (ocean). Aeons later, Bhagiratha, a descendant of Sagara, asked Ganga to cleanse the ashes of the 60,000 princes, and her resultant torrential fall from heaven created the great river and where it met the ocean, the princes’ souls were washed and raised to heaven and Gangasagar (Sagar Island) was formed. So, let us join the pilgrimages to Kapi Muni’s Temple (see above) and race 2400nm from Cocos Island deep in the Sagara thence, in rather rapid Rapido 60s.

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!
