Commentary

The second leg of the Rounding the New World series started in light conditions, with just 4 knots of south-westerly wind on the starting line. The main fleet immediately headed southwest in search of stronger breeze, and the gamble paid off. Within nine hours, the leading contenders were experiencing winds of up to 32 knots, although this came at a price: VMC was strongly negative, at times exceeding 8 knots away from the Cape Horn waypoint. By the third day, the fleet gradually began turning south. At this stage, the eventual winner was almost 500 nautical miles behind the race leader—a striking reminder that in a race of this length, the right route can matter far more than an early lead.

From there, the main fleet settled into a powerful run toward Cape Horn, with strong and favourable winds carrying the boats all the way to the waypoint. After rounding Cape Horn, the fleet faced another tactical dilemma: whether to head for the Le Maire Strait or gybe east into the open Atlantic. In the end, only one of the frontrunners opted for the strait, passing north of Isla de los Estados, or Staten Island, Argentina. The favourable winds continued to accompany the fleet for the remainder of the race, producing a fast final stretch. The winner had established a decisive advantage 850 nautical miles from the finish, while the remaining podium positions stayed in contention right up to the finish line.

A total of 121 contenders participated, with 105 having reached the finish at the time of writing. The routing spread was substantial: the longest distance sailed was 7,117 nautical miles, resulting in 90th place, while the shortest was just 5,354 nautical miles, finishing in 86th. The winner completed the course in 12 days, 11 hours and 17 minutes, achieving an impressive average VMC of 16.5 knots, with a real average speed of 21.1 knots. Another fast and strategically demanding leg—where the early miles mattered less than finding the right route when it counted.
