Commentary

What began as a relatively typical strategic split—Great Circle route to the southwest versus a more direct rhumb line to the northwest—soon evolved into a test of weather reading and precise course changes. Over the first four days, the southwest group battled both highs and lows, threading their way between weather systems. Despite the intense navigation efforts, no group gained a decisive edge early on.

Day 10 marked the turning point. Following a gybe some four hours prior, a significant forecast update prompted nearly the entire fleet to alter course further east—except one. The westernmost yacht held its northern course, a bold move that ultimately earned them a well-deserved silver medal. Meanwhile, the eventual winner executed a perfectly timed passage through a high-pressure system near 23°S, a decisive maneuver that set them apart from the fleet.

In the days that followed, consistent easterly winds took hold, favoring the eastern group with superior true wind angles. This allowed them to maintain strong, steady progress while others fought to keep pace. As for the rest of the fleet, competition remained fierce. While the winner and runner-up secured a clear lead, the battle for bronze was hotly contested—only decided within the final 100 nautical miles. Remarkably, positions three through twenty crossed the finish line within the span of a single hour, highlighting just how tight the racing was down the line.

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
