Commentary

Right from the start, two main strategies were recognized, (in addition to the conventional rhumbline option). The usual suspects were equally split between the scenes, NW and W. The westerners utilized a long-term forecast, heading for, what seemed to deliver continues headwinds for 2 days. At most, this group was 250 nm behind the front runners. On day 3 there was a shift, and development in windspeed, favouring these sailors with broad reach, propelling (is that an approved expression in this company?) the vessels to over 25 kn of speed. This resulting in reducing the drawback to 0 in 36 hours. After 6 days the two opponent groups converged, but a smaller group tried an outbreak opting for stronger winds even further west. These opportunists eventually returned to the main group while only one determined sailor stayed devoted to chosen strategy. Long shot or not, it paid out in a fantastic achievement.

What comes to the rest of us, the competition was tough. Second place was also quite clear, but the bronze medal had several rivals, and was set with some 500 nm left. The next 10 contestants arrived within 2h.

96 of 139 participants reached the finish line, at the time of writing.

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
