Commentary

There wasn't a lot of wind about along the east coast of Aotearoa, the island of the long white cloud, so that to make any progress in our Tall Ships Class B masquerading as replica Beagles it paid to stand well offshore. If the ghost of Darwin was on board with anyone of us, he'll have been disappointed as there will have been precious little to observe, classify or philosophise about, other than, how far exactly east should one go, which as has happened before, the crew aboard the good ship WRmirekd, got sweetly right.

Thus, by the time the 90-strong fleet (out of 117 entries) had reached The Dramatic Volcano of White Island, Te Puia o Whakaari, it was all over bar the shouting, and as our old-timers are not equipped with VHF, that was quite pointless, so on we went to finally get some sight of flora and fauna rounding the Coromandel Peninsula and passing the islands of the Hauraki Gulf.

"But on we sailed, regardless, slowly and sedately enjoying the southern summer weather, Mirek doggedly pursued by bonk and Vida and the rest of the fleet. In the end, it was 86 Beaglers made it back to the Bay of Islands to tell tales of and sing songs of mythical kings and iguanas.

I have flown to star-stained heights
On bend and battered wings
In search of mythical kings
Mythical kings and iguanas

Well done, all!"

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
