Commentary

This was the fourth time we raced over the top of North America but this time, in order to kinda comply with the concept of the HILAT Series that this race was the curtain call for, departing for Alaska from Halifax in Nova Scotia (nevertheless more than 10o S of Antica Scotia aka Caledonia) not Maryland (same latitude as Cadiz). And as always much fun was had by all, guessing, no figuring, what was the best route, east or west of Newfoundland, and east or west or even simply south of Baffin Island, following the route that Franklin might have, through the Hudson Strait, the Gulf of Boothia and into his eponymous Franklin Strait, if only he hadn't got ice-bound and perished.

This time keeping west of Newfoundland was very much quicker than staying out on the open North Atlantic ocean, and most of the more than 100 SOLers who made it all the way to Alaska got that first call right. But the Baffin bifurcation was a different matter, and a hardy fleet led by bonknhoot and Sax747 continued north, relying on past experience and the fact that those east to west distances up there are shorter than they look. Hardy but wrong, and within a few days it became clear that the majority who had headed west and then north were on a winner.

And so it was that WRmirekd romped nicely home with a lead of almost half an hour on his nearest pursuers, which included antares_sydney in 4th, which placing was sufficient for him to win the HILAT Series and his first series on SOL overall. Impressive by the both of 'em!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
