Commentary

It's a long way to Tipperary, about 10,000 nautical miles from Melbourne, but not in a First 40, as that route takes you across the Himalayas, and you'd do better going in First Class. It's only half that distance to Osaka, and yes the First 40 gets you there without too many detours. However, it will take you quite a while, as our competitors in our Melbourne Osaka prelude to the planned 2025 real-life race began to realise when after two weeks of sailing they found themselves wondering where to now as they drifted about in the equatorial doldrums, with at least a further two weeks to go, if they could only find some steady breeze.

Perhaps they mused, perhaps First Class might have been a more practical way to get there, and if air travel is ruled out, then by passenger liner! They're called cruise ships these days, and for the price of a molded 3D Mylar No. 1 one will take you to Japan in more comfort and less time than a First 40. Alternatively, being a sailor if you wanted a more spartan experience, you could get a passage on a container ship for half the money, say the price of an electric outboard for your rubber dinghy.

Reflections over, the fact is that 100 sofa sailors, aka SOLers departed Melbourne in their virtual First 40s on the 20th of April, and before the time limit ran out on May 27th, 75 had got to Osaka, led in on May 17th by gryhrt from the United States, who remarkably put more than 4 hours on his nearest pursuers, How that happened, the report by 3rd place finisher Siaki under the rising sun above gives you an inkling, but no more than that. So thank you Siaki, and a grand hoorah for gryhrt!

Tall Ships Races 2025 - Le Havre to Dunkirk

Welcome to the first of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . The course for this first race is between the French ports of Le Havre and Dunkirk; circa 125nm in Sailonline’s magnificent 90m Barque.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
