Nassau to Bodø: A Swift Finish to the RTW Series The Nassau to Bodø leg of this year’s RTW series delivered a surprisingly fast finish, clocking in at just 16 days—even for our relatively slow yacht. The podium finishers covered an impressive 4,600 nautical miles, averaging 11.9 knots over the course.

Competitors employed two main strategies: a smaller group opted for the great circle route—the shortest distance between two points—while the majority followed the rhumb line. Initially, the great circle group gained a solid lead, extending it to 120 nautical miles by Day 6. However, fortunes shifted over the next two days as the rhumb line group capitalized on a favorable system delivering winds of 20-30 knots, significantly closing the gap. By Day 9, the rhumb line group temporarily split when faced with a high-pressure zone but regrouped by Day 11, converging to chase a powerful storm named Burt. This system proved pivotal, with its winds exceeding 45 knots and propelling the fleet at speeds of over 20 knots. Some yachts recorded an impressive 24-hour distance of 440 nautical miles during this stretch. As Burt powered the fleet forward, the great circle group fell behind, trailing by more than 200 nautical miles. The decisive moment came on Day 13, as the fleet passed the Hebrides and faced a critical navigational choice around the Shetland Islands. Ultimately, the eastern (inside) route proved faster, with all podium finishers emerging from this path to claim their spots.

The Nassau to Bodø leg will be remembered for its exhilarating pace and strategic complexities, a fitting finale to an unforgettable RTW series.

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
