Commentary

Let there be no doubt that our Class B Beagle is quite the best boat for naturalists to explore remote islands - sturdy, steady and slow, and in her virtual version with an uncanny ability to turn on a sixpence to close in on the shore and get a better look at the exotic flora and fauna, which the best navigators all took advantage of, coming away from the start in the lee of Reunion. A long long close-hauled haul followed and by the time our fleet (or should that be pack) of Beagles got to Serpent Island, our new joiner KaSToR from France had built up a slender but handy lead.

Thanking our lucky starts that global geopolitics had not yet conjoined the Chagos Archipelago more than 1000 nm the north east to the Republic of Mauritius, our Beagles turned sharply south for a further coastal inspection, now of the main island, where of course there was not a dodo to be spotted. But the lead stayed with KaSToR, all the way back to Reunion and the finish at Saint Leu, which most people approached from the south, thus foregoing some very sedate sightseeing along the northern coast.

And KaSToR held off Wrmirekd and rafa all the way home for a famous first victory first time out on SOL. Chapeau, mon brave!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
