Commentary

In the heart of Japan's captivating volcanic waters, our SOLers engaged in a heart-pounding 48-nautical-mile sprint, skillfully navigating the challenging figure-of-8 course in their Fareast 31R v2's!

The competition was nothing short of intense as our SOLers showcased their sailing prowess, conquering every point of sail with finesse. The climax was a nail-biter, with Patrick70119 of South Africa seizing victory, closely pursued by Ryba of Poland in second place, and FreyjaUSA of the USA completing the podium — all three crossing the finish line within a thrilling 30-second window!

This race added an electrifying chapter to our annual sprint championship. Huge congratulations to our podium finishers, the top 10, and a heartfelt salute to every SOLer who made this event a pulsating affair!

Halifax to Hooper Bay 2024

And now it’s Autumn in the Arctic, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. Having receded all summer, ice is starting to return to the numerous straits and bays of Canada’s North West Passage. High time then to set off on our last leg of the High Latitudes Series from Halifax in Nova Scotia to Alaska’s Hooper Bay. It’s 3850nm and we need to hurry, so we’ll take the Pelagic 77!
