Commentary

The Christmas season continues, but our much-anticipated Christmas-to-Christmas sailing race has drawn to a close, with the finishing window extending until December 30 at 23:00. This year, the weather conditions presented numerous equally viable route options. Unusually, the shorter route proved to be the fastest, adding an element of unpredictability to this oceanic race and resulting in some new faces gracing the podium.

The initial maneuvers saw the main group setting sail on a starboard tack, heading northwest, while a smaller contingent opted for a southerly course on a port tack. The first week unfolded without any significant disputes regarding the chosen routes. The southwestern group initially aimed for the Torres Strait, but a few adventurous sailors decided to take a more southerly route. By day 7, a notable split occurred within the northwest fleet. The majority executed a gybe onto a port tack, ultimately heading south of the Philippines. This segment further divided, with the leading boats heading for the Helmahera Sea, northwest of New Guinea, and a smaller faction targeting the Molucca Sea, west of Taliabu Island. A particularly daring sailor opted for the challenging Makassar Strait, securing a lead for almost two days, ultimately finishing at position #87. The northern group, destined for the San Bernardino Strait, witnessed a handful of sailors opting for an extensive journey around the top of the Philippines, perhaps seeking the ease of navigation during the night.

This year's race, characterized by a variety of strategic choices and unexpected outcomes, showcased the adaptability and skill of the participating sailors. As we await the conclusion of the finishing window, it's evident that the Christmas-to-Christmas sailing competition has once again delivered excitement, challenge, and a touch of maritime unpredictability.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
