A fleet of 120 sailboats set off punctually, eventually joined by a total of 153 participants. Out of these, 104 successfully crossed the finish line (as of the current update). The race dynamics unfolded dramatically as 12 hours into the competition, the fleet opted for divergent strategies. One faction sought stronger winds near the coastal areas, while the remainder ventured into the open waters. By the 20-hour mark, a third contingent emerged, pushing even closer to the coastline. After two days of navigation, the initial two groups rejoined forces. However, on the fourth day, the racers encountered the notorious doldrums. A stroke of luck favoured a select group situated at longitude -123°, enabling them to swiftly traverse this challenging area. This fortunate occurrence propelled them to a commanding lead of over 50 nautical miles over the main fleet. The fifth day brought a strategic maneuver from half a dozen boats in the western cluster. By tactically tacking early, they managed to elude the pursuing main fleet. Simultaneously, the eastern group, still leading due to their more direct route, confronted a low-pressure system, allowing the western competitors to close the gap.

As the race entered its eighth day, the western cohort surged ahead, although their progress led to fragmentation. A notable incident involved the vessel RICOTINA, which veered significantly westward. On the twelfth day, RICOTINA ingeniously navigated onto a conveyor belt of favourable conditions, propelling her into a commanding lead. Positioned 12th at that moment, she surged to the forefront, maintaining a lead of 2.6 nautical miles over the second-place boat and an impressive 30 nautical miles over the third. One day later, RICOTINA's dominance continued, with a lead extending to 400 nautical miles over the main fleet and 115 miles over the runner-up. Upon reaching the finish line, a gap of 47 nautical miles equated to a lead of 1 hour and 50 minutes, while the third-place contender trailed by 58 miles, equivalent to 2 hours and 10 minutes. The main fleet lagged significantly, still positioned 600 miles behind. RICOTINA's remarkable performance stood as a testament to her exceptional achievement.
Acknowledging outstanding performance, the SMPF prize was awarded to "mb007," who secured the 38th position upon completing the race.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
