Commentary

No reports on this one, but your roving reporter sharply remembers what went on. Soft balmy winds generally from ahead but sometimes from the sea reigned for the duration of the two weeks window, but early doors, over the course of Tuesday, 5 April, up to 9 knots of breeze out of the WSW developed, which as far as the 7-day WX stretched was as good as it was going to get, and the usual suspects, bar Kipper1258, went out for a spin, or rather an overnighter, with Pit8008 coming out on top as the wind faded away again.

Several days later, new WX's started to show that a much better window would likely develop for Friday, 15 April. And it did, but in the early hours of the UTC morning and those who had not checked the 2230z WX before going to bed (or out for the day) missed it badly, as the favourable breeze died away as quicky as it had come. Pit8008 missed the ideal depart time by slightly more than a minute , thus ceding his lead to Italy's Cippalippa, who had not featured Tuesday the week before. Starting at 4 seconds past midnight, Cippa recorded a time of 9:44:11, several hours quicker than the previous bests as the winds now got up to 11 knots and briefly more, again out of the WSW. Pit did it in 9:44:24, and Vida_Maldita starting 11 minutes later recording a 9:44:30, with Kipper starting for his one and only run a further 16 minutes later just missing the podium in 9:44:36. Well done all who spotted the moment and scrambled out onto the course as soon as they could!

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
