Commentary
Race 2 of the 2020 SSANZ Triple Series is always the longest these days and ranging, as it does, around Waiheke Island and the entire Hauraki Gulf it is a brilliantly challenging race. The race this year was entertaining indeed, with a tidy group of racers flying the flags of 28 different nations taking part, some for the first time in these waters! Zigging and zagging around Auckland’s islands is a fun pastime for Sailonline’s racers but it can come as a little surprise for those new to them. The real race experience can been seen in this excellent YouTube video from LiveSailDie.

Our direct competitors of the three-race series by directly competing against the sailors of the Young 88 Owners Association – these days Young 88s sail in their own Division.

The SSANZ Results show that the best corrected time for the Young 88 start, S/Y Mindbender was 6h31m17s (elapsed: 8h28m09s) while our winner, nacrr, arrived at the finish in 6h42m18s which were Sailonline’s Young 88s also subjected to correction would mean that nacrr did best of all! Our podium three with just 2s separating 1st from 2nd and 28s separating 2nd from 3rd was again keenly fought for! Congratulations to all three!

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2025

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors (SOLers for short) to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. Once again, as is our wont on Lake Ontario, a fleet of Beneteau First 36.7s is being made available to virtual racers. There is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this 300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May; so, let the competition be fierce!

Tall Ships Races 2025 - Le Havre to Dunkirk

Welcome to the first of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . The course for this first race is between the French ports of Le Havre and Dunkirk; circa 125nm in Sailonline’s magnificent 90m Barque.
NOTE: Starts and Finishes in tall ships racing are always offshore to avoid conflict with shipping and shipping lanes; online and real-life may not match exactly.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
