Commentary
Carib Rum Run was dreamed up in 2010 as a way for racers to have some fun while racing as keenly as ever and has been raced close to/over International Talk Like a Pirate Day ever since! It is also used as a way to promote membership of the Sailonline Yacht Club (SYC) by encouraging members to join SYC and change their name, for this race only, to a piratical one! Sailonline is entirely free to its racers and is run by volunteers, so the only source of income to keep its servers and website “afloat” is by these memberships. Our Carib Rum Run always proves popular, perhaps because it is a PRIZE race, awarding not only SYC memberships to its podium but also a prize, always donated/arranged by SOLer RainbowChaser (this year, a Captain Cook Magnifier).

Pirate Names

Not everyone changes their boatname, but our podium this year did see two Pirates taking second and third. For the second year in a row, Sailonline’s Race Committee provided us with Orange Cats for the race, in full anticipation that autumn Caribbean winds would see us zooming around the course and arriving in Cancun almost before we had left our start, the Mount Gay pickup off the island of Barbados. But… with wx systems behaving very differently around the world, the SOL fleet, flying the flags of 31 different nations, found itself facing not hurricanes or high winds but long periods of virtual calm. This made for a challenging race, so our three podium placed takers are to be congratulated on taking the top spots! Very well done, guys!

Kamchatsky to Tromsoe 2024

Just before the light failed entirely in Antarctica, Skip Novak managed to get his Pelagic 77 out of the ice and north up the Pacific to Kamchatsky. The sun is shining (24/7) and not a penguin to be seen, and Skip believes the Norh East Passage is ice-free (sufficiently) to attempt it, so all aboard for a c 4250nm voyage from east to west across the top of Siberia, Russia and Norway to Tromsoe!
