Commentary
One hundred and twenty SOLers made it to the line outside Hong Kong harbour for our virtual version of RHKYC's inaugural race to Puerto Galera in The Philippines. As the RHKYC's real life fleet had a start inside the harbour, SOLers started an hour later so that as the virtual and real life boats approached Waglan Island, to leave the island to starboard or to port respectively, the fleets were evenly matched for what the long range forecast was predicting was going to be a long and balmy slog to windward.

It was interesting to see how SOLers with obviously more confidence in the forecast (it is after all what they sail in) chose to sail with sails more eased over starboard (i.e. on port tack) towards a tack point several days out, than any of the real boats did. One SOLer, Bulgaria's Beliberda, did so 'in extremis' to lead the fleet halfway as one after the other went about onto starboard on a course in the general direction of the north of Luzon. A few went early, trusting their intuition rather than their router, and as the fleet approached Luzon, two of these, BS1 and Brandystrega, on tacking again, had built up a significant lead.

Alas, a strange electric storm now hit the fleet, lasting some seven hours, during which time no new electronic instructions could be issued, whilst all boats sailed on. SOLers in the habit of setting DCs for many hours ahead (just in case) were barely affected, but both our leaders went badly off course as the wind was shifting considerably, and so it was that in the end, WRmirekd took the gun.

Back onshore, the Sailonline Race Committee deliberated long and hard, and adjudged "that skippers were unreasonably prevented from controlling their yachts" by the web server outage (for that is what it was) and that therefore results would not count towards the rankings of the various competitions (SYCCH, SYCQ2, SUPERSOL, SYC) that the race was part of. Nevertheless, a big well done to WRmirekd, who mastered all the best of all!

Kamchatsky to Tromsoe 2024

Just before the light failed entirely in Antarctica, Skip Novak managed to get his Pelagic 77 out of the ice and north up the Pacific to Kamchatsky. The sun is shining (24/7) and not a penguin to be seen, and Skip believes the Norh East Passage is ice-free (sufficiently) to attempt it, so all aboard for a c 4250nm voyage from east to west across the top of Siberia, Russia and Norway to Tromsoe!
