Commentary
At short notice, a mighty fleet of 72ft America's Cup foiling catamarans assembled at the mouth of the river Tagus for a final memorial race in honour of Joao Malafaia, owner of psail and active SOLer of many years standing, who passed away suddenly and tragically on Sunday evening, the 7th of April. Joao was one of life's great 'givers' and his gifts to SOL and his many competitors were numerous – endless help for all who asked with the use of the QtVlm router, part of the team led by Kipper1258 that cracked the QtVlm interpolation issue, finder and developer of polars keeping our fleet up-to-date.

Joao had his issues with our SOL technology. One of these was the not-real way that aids were available that could tell your opponent everything that you were doing (in real time, not planning: ed1). Another was the performance loss algorithm which, if you are going fast enough, can see your performance drop to 80% and not recover for at least an hour (if you don't know any of the tricks: ed2).

Appropriate then indeed to find a light 5kn - 6kn breeze wafting in from the south east, for a beat out the harbour at speeds immediately confronting us with the dreaded performance loss. Early doors, it was bonknhoot, introduced to SOL by psail, who showed us how best to deal with that. But once out at sea, our ACs were quickly hitting 20kn and more of boatspeed, and at the 180 degree turn in front of Setubal, Kipper1258 nailed it to take over the lead from Smo, sailing seat-of-the-pants as ever, and thus it stayed.

Thus, it is Kipper1258 who has become the proud owner of a magnificent trophy presented to SOL by WRmirekd. Keep it well, Kipper! Below you see an image of the ornamental sextant – as that is what it is – currently winging its way to Brisbane, Australia. Flanking the trophy either side are two of the several tributes coursed out by Joao's friends in the space-time continuum of our beloved SOL charts. And underneath (just click on the picture of the sextant) you will find a final memento – a timelapse of the race created by Bimmer using an application developed by Russia's and our very own Kenza.

Kamchatsky to Tromsoe 2024

Just before the light failed entirely in Antarctica, Skip Novak managed to get his Pelagic 77 out of the ice and north up the Pacific to Kamchatsky. The sun is shining (24/7) and not a penguin to be seen, and Skip believes the Norh East Passage is ice-free (sufficiently) to attempt it, so all aboard for a c 4250nm voyage from east to west across the top of Siberia, Russia and Norway to Tromsoe!
