GENERAL

The Quarterly Championships have been introduced from this year with two objectives in mind :

1) To allow those SOLers who for various IRL reasons cannot participate to SOL racing all year round to have a chance to be rewarded for their top performance in one or more race types over a shorter period of time.

2) To enable newbies joining SOL after the beginning of the year to find as early as possible an available challenge that suits them , without having to wait for next year’s annual championship start.

The first goal has been already clearly fulfilled , as some of the Q1 winners are SOLers who have different commitment during other seasons.

The second one will be clearly met once we go further into 2015 , as Q1 coincides with the beginning of the annual Championships as well .

OCEAN ( OCQ1 ) - nacrr ( Portugal)

The Ocean Q1 series included the Sailonline World Race Legs 3, 4 and 5 from Abu Dhabi to Itajai via Sanya and Auckland, travelling more than 18,000nm. Nacrr won with 16 points (6,3,7) from Rafa (21:12,4,5) and Viking (23:3,18,2). The legs were won by Exmeromotu, rumskib and ita10267. The races covered many different oceans, seas and weather systems. Leg 3 had several crucial stages, not least navigating the tricky light winds of the Malacca Strait. An early decision was required in Leg 4 after entering the Pacific Ocean between the Philippines and Taiwan where the winning route took a northeast then south east course, before heading south near Vanuatu. Winning Leg 5 required surfing the strong weather systems in the southern ocean, as well as picking the best latitude particularly approaching Cape Horn. There were more than 1800 entrants over the three legs, so winning this series is testament to superb SOLing. Congratulations nacrr!

SYC ( SYQ1 ) - rumskib ( Germany )

Rumskib has shown the fleet how to do it by winning the first quarter of the 2015 SYC championships with a set of three single figure results from races in Asia, America and Europe. A2 has chased him hard with one second place but slipped up with two 10ths (many would be so happy with that score). Completing the podium is Neuroman with great results in Europe and Asia but he found the heavy airs overnight down the East Seaboard with HiRes winds too challenging overnight and scored a 15th.

SPRINT (SRQ1 ) - Lou ( Italy )

In this year’s sprint championship we have tried to keep the formula of a Round the Island Race and a Pick your Own Course duet of races in various rarely visited parts of the world. This first quarter has seen boats separated by often only fractions of a second throughout the series. The first quarter finale saw Winston finish 2nd in the series with a 3rd in the race but Lou managed to hold on by enough to give him a series win! Iomkiwi came in a close 3rd with 5 out of 6 top 10 finishes. Well Done All!!

TIMED (TRQ1) - atlet ( Sweden )

click on image to see larger

Atlet wins the first quarter’s timed races with a win in the first race setting up the victory in the remote Southern Ocean Kerguelan Islands, followed up with a solid tenth and excellent third in the remaining races. Winning this first race and the second (Elbetico’s Fun Run, won by MikiCe) required picking the best start time within the narrow weather window giving the optimum weather conditions. The third race in Iceland (won by rumskib) offered more options. Neuroman and karriv complete the podium. Winston_4 was equal first after two races, but fell back to fourth after only placing 13th in the third race.

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base

For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
