The Antwerp to Belfast race was first run in January 2009 and thus is truly a classic from the early days of Sailonline. Dusted off and brought into the modern client, it has proved once again that less can really be more. This race has just a start and a finish but, in between, mainland UK - not just a "small island"! The fleet divided into North group and South group and as the race elapsed it became clear that a different boat would have produced a radically different outcome for each fleet, so, if nothing else, this race can serve to demonstrate to those who don't sail in reality, just how crucial a boat (polar) choice can be. Our top three are to be congratulated for a brilliant job well done - to take one of the top spots in a tough SOL race where the first 10 take nearly 45mins to arrive is truly an achievement to be proud of. Well done!

Race Report by SarahWilson
What an interesting race, starting with a difficult departure from Antwerpen down the River Schelde in light shifting winds. Of course that was nothing compared with the choice ahead – whether to go around Britain to the north or south? The longer route over the top offered stronger winds especially for the finish, but with a tough beat up the eastern coast of England and Scotland. It was tempting and looked like a very interesting place to sail.

To go south was of course shorter but with lighter breezes shifting to head winds for the latter half of the race. Given the vagaries of long distance forecasts, it was probably safer to stay south! Mid-channel a DDOS attack on Sailonline's server provider resulted in sporadic connection for many for some time. Here in Australia connection was intermittent, something which was to be repeated for me within fifteen minutes of the finish when again I could not log in to SOL for about five minutes, and I was praying my DC for the line held good. Thanks to RainbowChaser for great management of this issue! Places and advantages changed for the southern fleet with the timing of a tack south of the Isle of Wight, and after a bit of plain sailing to Land’s End, there followed the long beat up the Irish Sea. Routers were out the window for this long section of the race where hand steering for max VMG was mostly the go.

Though the southern fleet arrived first, I hope Karriv or someone will also write up the experiences of the northern fleet as they handled the high winds, maze of islands and variety of possible routes whilst we southerners were in the more relaxed waters down south!

Kamchatsky to Tromsoe 2024

Just before the light failed entirely in Antarctica, Skip Novak managed to get his Pelagic 77 out of the ice and north up the Pacific to Kamchatsky. The sun is shining (24/7) and not a penguin to be seen, and Skip believes the Norh East Passage is ice-free (sufficiently) to attempt it, so all aboard for a c 4250nm voyage from east to west across the top of Siberia, Russia and Norway to Tromsoe!
