CONGRATULATIONS to NZL_WairuaExpress and Open Country for coming 8th in Division Five and to NZL_YachtYakka who was sailing with Edwin Delaat (14yrs old) in Crac-a-Jac for coming 13th in the same division. ****************************************** REPORT FROM NZL_WAIRUAEXPRESS Coastal Classic. We had a great start - and we took off under main and head sail - to give us manoeuvring space- many had kites up - but the wind shear and dirty air made it tough going for many of them- we were able to out run and out sail many - to stay in clear air. Once around North head - after the jibe- we set the number 2 kite. We could have ( should) have gone to the number 1. But it was a bit fickle and we wanted to get smooth air before changing. The Now casting said 26kts at Tiri - so we waited about 1/2 an hour too long- before changing. That would cost us 3 places at the finish!!! and the boat race:( We had our brand new North Sails 3DL mainsail on - WOW its a piece of art! We saw Crac-A jac at the start but we were much too powerful and pulled away from them very early. The Progress times are all a bit skewed - as we were playing real "mind Games" when we called in. We delayed a couple of the calls by 30 minutes - to suck a few of our rivals into thinking they had blown us away. However at Brett we called in about 5 minutes late - but took 55 minutes out of many of the boats on the beat to the finish. We passed 12 boats on the 8 mile beat to the finish!!!! We finished 6th 0r 7th on line - but could have got into 3rd had we not delayed the kite change- Very close racing over the 120 mile course- Some wind holes had us parked up for a few minutes - but we were able to wriggle free. Next adventure is the RAYC White Island Race in 25th November- We are doing this two handed as a build up to next years Round North Island Race. ****************************************** During the course of the race the organisers received word that Crac-a-Jac had lost its rig, this was confirmed and the Coastguard informed.. it was however a FALSE report!! Could it be the anti-young -sailors brigade were up to their tricks? In any event, this pic, copyright Margaret Dijkhuis at SailWorld shows Crac-a-Jac happily tied up in Russell: ************************* Link to YouTube of IRL Race Start here ************************* Back in the 1920s the route from Auckland to Russell was raced by speedboats attempting to set speed records and it was from this that the modern annual yacht race developed in the 1980s - initially a race for all-comers but latterly being raced in classes. Prizes are awarded not only to division winners, but also for seamanship and the littlest boat finishing! A couple of SOLers are taking part in this year's race, both in Division 5 - NZL_Yachtyakka is going to be sailing with the youngster, Edwin Delaat, in Crac-a-Jac, while NZL_WairuaExpress will be sailing his boat, Open Country! If there are any other SOLers participating among the 197 entrants, do please shout out so we can keep an eye on your progress! Updates from participants will be featured here. FAIR WINDS EVERYONE! Kamchatsky to Tromsoe 2024

Just before the light failed entirely in Antarctica, Skip Novak managed to get his Pelagic 77 out of the ice and north up the Pacific to Kamchatsky. The sun is shining (24/7) and not a penguin to be seen, and Skip believes the Norh East Passage is ice-free (sufficiently) to attempt it, so all aboard for a c 4250nm voyage from east to west across the top of Siberia, Russia and Norway to Tromsoe!
