Commentary
One of the many joys of Sailonline is that we are able to voyage in the footsteps of giants (or sail in their wakes!). Find us the appropriate performance polar, and let our Polar Gurus work their magic, and we can be racing tall ships, longships, modern racers around the world, historic courses. Our Shackleton Challenge was a four-race series designed several years ago and, by judicious selection of polars from the Sailonline boathouse, the two legs raced in our Class B Tall Ship and the two legs raced in our Draken longship, have given all of us a sense of the limited sailability of Shackleton’s “Endurance” as well as the limited manoeuverability of his jury-rigged rowing boat, the “James Caird”. Arguably this series has, as originally designed, brought all of us a little closer to understanding just what an immense endeavour it was for Sir Ernest Shackleton to bring his crew back to safety.

Our series winners are to be congratulated on their success. As you can read from reports by two of our podium, things weren’t all plain sailing and this, too, is borne out by the differences in points gained during the series. A big thank you to all who took part and an even bigger Well Done to our podium!
