Narrative
Leg 4 - In what is widely regarded as one of the great feats of navigation and sailing, Shackleton and 5 crew sail a whaleboat 800nm to South Georgia, which they then cross on foot, reaching the whaling port of Stromness and securing rescue for the expedition. 3 months later, the entire remaining crew is rescued.

Commentary
This fourth and final leg of Sailonline’s first Shackleton Challenge was very straightforward – at least the course was – and so it sailed. Even with such a straightforward race there were many SOLers using routing but, curiously, a simple TWA course for the first couple of days also produced a good result. Once again our wonderful longship stood in for the rowing boat and jerry-rigged sail of the original expedition and racers seemed to adapt to its limitations with ease.

The last leg of a series is always somewhat poignant and this one perhaps more than usual as, for those who took time to read the story of the Imperials Trans-Antarctic Expedition it brings to an end our sail in the wakes of heroes.

As always, many congratulations to our podium – who together with the 4th arrival, found themselves running ahead of the chasing fleet. Bravo, guys!
